Love, love, love this question. In fact, it’s a gift to us all. Every nonprofit should be asking themselves this important question. And, we should thank Tom for posing it.

But, don’t you dare stop at fundraising.

Done properly, your brand is intimately informed by the collective wants, needs, and experiences of ALL your audiences.

Hell yes, nonprofits need funding. You also need board members, volunteers, corporate sponsors, community partners, qualified talent and recipients for the life-changing services you provide.

Your brand is more than a logo, clever tagline, or contemporary color palette. And hear me now: It’s more than a shiny set of brand guidelines. It’s the promise you make to f_ _ _ing everyone.

Your brand is the true essence – heart and soul – of your entire organization. It’s the affinity and experiences you create across all touch points of your brand. It defines and differentiates your approach to fulfilling your mission. It makes who you are as an organization known, felt and understood.

It can inspire donors to give. Supporters to take action. Prospective employees to want to be a part of the incredible work you’re doing.

And, perhaps most importantly, your brand must be a beacon for those in desperate need of your services. Shining a brightly-lit path to your wide-open front door.

If it isn’t, then your brand is not only KILLING your FUNDRAISING, it’s killing your NONPROFIT.
